About

Hi, I’m Evan! I’m the human behind the studio. I’ve spent years trying to unlearn the messaging of toxic productivity & hustle culture, which is so worth it and so annoyingly difficult. For every step forward, there’s some new destructive gremlin to uncover. I am always (re)learning that the goal can’t be perfection—the goal is practice.I’m a writer, a podcaster, and a lover of projects. I’m also deeply invested in restorative culture practices, which I see as intimately connected to my studio work (and everything else)! Surprising no one, I’m a Virgo, a former theater kid, and neurodivergent.uncommon practice studio exists to support other people with the tools, reflection, and practice to craft a new relationship to making & doing the things that matter to them.

Creative Conferences

Creative Conferences are generative and collaborative conversations aimed at getting you unstuck. Some people might call it coaching or advising or mentorship, but those words mean different things to different people. I think of it as a meeting of the minds, where I hold space for you and we brainstorm together! What does that look like in practice? In a 45-60 minute call we'll discuss what you're working on and where you've gotten stuck. I'll ask you some questions and offer prompts for things to reflect on and chat about. If you're open to it, I may suggest tools or processes to try out, or share potential sources of inspiration. After our conversation you'll get a recording of our time together and any notes I have to share.

FAQs

Who are creative conferences for?
I'm currently working with writers/creatives/artists/makers who are stuck somewhere in a project. Maybe you keep rewriting the first chapter of your book and can't seem to get beyond it. Maybe you've made an art zine but can't bring yourself to show it to anyone, even though you made it to be shared. What you're working on doesn't so much matter, what matters is that you've reached a point that you feel like you should be able to get beyond but can't seem to.

How much does a one-on-one cost?
I’m offering Creative Conferences for $60 per session.
I have a limited number of reduced price and free slots available each month, for folks for whom the full price would be inaccessible. If you’re interested in a sliding scale spot, contact me and we’ll work it out!
If after your first session you’re interested in working together in a more on-going way, we can discuss a package price for a bundle of conferences.

Do I count as a writer/creative/artist/maker?
If you're asking that question, almost certainly! I won't ask you for credentials, and you don't even need to be working on something you intend to share with other people. Still, if you're not sure you can contact me and we can discuss!

Why people who are 'stuck'?
Honestly, because I have a lot of personal experience with being stuck and am very familiar with how much it sucks. I also know that there's often really useful information to be uncovered in unraveling what's keeping you stuck.

What do other people have to say about Creative Conferences?
Here’s a reflection from Lexxie B, “Working with Evan helped me re-spark passion to finish an important to me long-term creative project.
Before we met … I'd gone for months barely even opening my work.Enter Evan. They eased us into the conversation with questions about how I was feeling about the work, and where I was struggling. Evan helped me realize how I was getting in my own way … They not only helped me define the clear next step -- but also created space for me to tackle it during our session. The time together was incredibly valuable, and I left feeling excited about jumping back into the work. Evan not only helped me re-spark my passion on this project - they also reminded me that finishing it actually is achievable.”

Let's work together 1:1!

Body of Work

What does it mean, and what does it require, to be a person making things in the world? That’s the central question of Body of Work. Through essays at the intersection of process, productivity, and self-making BoW explores how it feels to make things and put them in the world.A bi-weekly feelings newsletter about creative work.

Rec Room

Sometimes it’s difficult to actually do the fun things we say we want to do. It's easy to fall into the trap of always choosing 'productivity' and prioritizing work over play (especially if the fun things we say we want to do involve the sometimes un-fun experience of being a beginner, or being bad at something).Rec Room aims to make recreation easier by providing space and company for play. It’s like co-working, but for fun! Body-doubling for hobbies!

Registration for the Fall 2024 Session is open now!

Activities you might do during your Rec Room time: Read, video games, watercolor, draw, scrapbook, learn to embroider, cook, juggle, study Latin, garden, dance, write poetry, Tarot, claymation, watch a comedy special, play piano, roll around on the floor.
